A major horse racing shock happened on Good Friday as 200-1 outsider Heavenly Heather won at Newcastle.

The filly, trained by Tracey Waggott at her stables near Durham, is the joint longest-priced winner in British Flat racing history.

Heavenly Heather, ridden by Amie Waugh, landed the Fillies and Mares Championships Handicap on All Weather Finals Day.

The horse had been beaten in all her previous five starts.

“We always knew she was a really good horse,” Waggott said. “It was just getting her fit enough. She’s such a big, heavy mare she takes that much work getting fit.”

Part-owner Chris Rain said Heavenly Heather was named by his mother before she died a year ago.

The longest-priced winner in British racing history was Equinoctial, returned at a starting price of 250-1 when winning over hurdles at Kelso in November 1990.

Heavenly Heather was the seventh 200-1 shot to win on the Flat in Britain, with Astapor the last at Hamilton in 2022.
